Rolf Benirschke and I attended La Jolla High School back in the early 1970s, so it was a thrill to work with him and share the incredible story of how Rolf nearly died from ulcerative colitis while kicking for the San Diego Chargers. Following ostomy surgery, he returned to the NFL and kicked his way to the Pro Bowl.

You can’t make this stuff up. That’s what I thought when I first heard about Dr. Nick’s head-shaking story about how he traveled around the country during the 2001 baseall season—when he weighed 467 pounds—drinking protein shakes so that he could eventuall shed 270 pounds. To the right, Nick and I share a baseball moment at San Diego’s Petco Park.

Fit Over 40 For Dummies (IDG Books, 2000)

Yup, I wrote one of those “Dummies” books, which is a lot harder than it looks. I found out that I had to write in the “Dummies” style, which is tight and controlled. There are something like 200 different “Dummies” books out there.

Marriage and Family Books

Co-author with Greg Johnson of three books:

Daddy’s Home (Tyndale, 1992)

Faithful Parents, Faithful Kids (Tyndale, 1993)

The Second Decade of Love (Tyndale, 1994)

I am the author, co-author, or collaborator of:

The Act of Marriage After 40 by Tim and Beverly LaHaye (Zondervan, 2000)

How to Be Happy Though Married by Tim and Beverly LaHaye (revised version, Tyndale, 2002)

Every Man’s Battle: Winning the War Against Male Sexual Temptation One Victory at a Time by Steve Arterburn and Fred Stoeker (WaterBrook, 2000)

Every Man’s Marriage by Steve Arterburn and Fred Stoeker (WaterBrook, 2001)

My very first book was Daddy’s  Home, written with Greg Johnson and released in 1992. The book was a modest hit, which led to a two-book contract with Tyndale House to write Faithful Parents, Faithful Kids and The Second Decade of Love.

As I said elsewhere, the Every Man’s Battle series—a dozen books with around 2 million copies in print—has been a personal and professional highlight for me. Fred Stoeker, the one behind the series, is a godly man who has been willing to “get real” about what really matters in a guy’s life.

Every Heart Restored by Fred and Brenda Stoeker (WaterBrook, 2004)

Tactics: The Spiritual Side to Every Young Man’s Battle by Fred Stoeker (WaterBrook, 2006).

Hero: Becoming the Man She Desires by Fred Stoeker and Jasen Stoeker (WaterBrook, 2009)

My latest book with Fred Stoeker is Hero, which is really the story about Fred’s oldest son, Jasen, falling in love with Rose but waiting until their wedding ceremony to share their first kiss. Fred and Jasen describe their feelings and share superb insights that every young man in a dating relationship can benefit from.

Books I’ve Written Under My Byline

Real Solutions for Getting Out of Debt (Servant, 2002)

Saving Money Any Way You Can (Servant, 1994)

I wrote Saving Money Any Way You Can back in the early 1990s when no one had ever heard of the Internet. I was trying to make ends meet on a modest Focus on the Family salary while Nicole was a stay-at-home mom with Andrea and Patrick, who were in elementary school then. Every buck counted, and a woman named Lou Gage, a master shopper, shared her advice with me. Real Solutions for Getting Out of Debt was written eight years later and hit the same themes as my first “”get your financial house in order” book.

21 Days to a Thrifty Lifestyle (Zondervan, 1998)

Teen Chat (Servant, 1999)

Touched by the Savior (Word, 1999)

Touched by the Savior will always be extra special for me because I end the book by telling the emotional story of how my brother, Pry, accepted Christ on his deathbed just a few days before succumbing to brain cancer at the age of 33.

Always: Stories of Marriages (Focus on the Family/Tyndale, 1999)

Books for Teens and Young Adults

Unglued & Tattooed: How to Save Your Teen from Raves, Ritalin, Goth, Body Carving, GHB, Sex, and 12 Other Emerging Threats (Regnery LifeLine, 2001) with Sara Trollinger

Unglued, Tattooed & Renewed: Compelling Stories from Teens Whose Lives Have Been Changed (House of Hope Press, 2003) with Sara Trollinger

Don’t Date Naked by Michael and Amy Smalley (Tyndale, 2003)

One of the all-time great titles for sure: Don’t Date Naked. Michael Smalley gets credit for that one. (In case you’re wondering, this is a book about dating and looking for someone to marry.)

More than a Match by Michael and Amy Smalley (WaterBrook Press, January 2007)

Simplify Your Life by Marcia Ramsland (W Publishing Group, 2003

Books in Which I Served as the General Editor

The Focus on the Family Guide to Growing a Healthy Home (Wolgemuth & Hyatt, 1991)

Technically speaking, Growing a Healthy Home, released in 1991, was my first book, but I was the General Editor, not the author, since the book was a compilation of stories that I had edited for Focus on the Family magazine. That’s a black-haired me pictured with Dr. Dobson on the back cover.

Memoir Books

Up, Up and Away: The Story of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. of the Fifth Dimension (Moody, 2004)

For someone who grew up with Top 40 radio in the Sixties, working with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., was a wonderful trip down Memory Lane. I had a blast recreating “The Summer of Love” in 1967 when their first hit, “Up, Up and Away” was released. That record was topped by their monster hit, “Age of Aquarius” a few years later. Marilyn and Billy are such great people that they came to my 50th birthday dinner party in our backyard. My friends were impressed!

Fiction

By the Sword with Rick Myatt (Broadman & Holman, 2006)

My first fiction effort was the story of Amber Robbins, an American reporter stationed in Jerusalem. Her dangerous search leads her on a path that pits her faith and her investigative reporting skills against Islamic fundamentalists intent on converting all people to Allah and his messenger, Mohammad.

The Swiss Courier with Tricia Goyer (Revell, 2009)
